Breast Reduction Surgery

Breast reduction surgery, which is also known as reduction mammaplasty, is a plastic surgery that is used to remove excess fat, tissue and skin from the breasts or sometimes to uplift pendulous breasts. If you have large breasts, you might also choose to have breast reduction surgery to ease discomfort or to achieve a breast size that is proportionate to your body.

Breast reduction surgery might also help to boost your self-image and increase your ability to participate in physical activities.

Breast reduction surgery is generally done for women who have large breasts and want to resolve issues such as:

  • Chronic back, neck and shoulder pain that requires pain medications
  • Chronic rash or skin irritation under the breasts
  • Nerve pain.
  • Restricted activity
  • Poor self-image related to large breasts
  • Difficulty fitting into bras and clothing

Breast reduction surgery isn't recommended for a person if they:

  • Smoke
  • Have certain conditions such as diabetes or heart problems
  • Are very obese
  • Want to avoid scars on your breasts
    • You can opt to have a breast reduction surgery at any age — sometimes even as a teenager. But in any case, if your breasts aren't yet fully developed, then you might need a second surgery later in life.

After this surgery, although there might be a possibility that your breast shape and size could change due to factors such as aging and weight gain or loss.
